Why You Should Hire A Personal Stylist

From talking to people over the years, there are a lot of misconceptions out there about personal stylists. A lot of people think stylists are only for the wealthy and aren't able to help 'normal' people, or that the stylist is going to make their clients wear mad clothes that don't suit them. Another misconception is that stylists are only for skinny folk, and they won't work with anyone over a size 10. Only celebrities have stylists, right?
Well, these beliefs are absolutely wrong. I personally think that there are a few TV shows from a few years back which have twisted a lot of people's thinking on what a personal stylist actually does and maybe scared them a little.
A good personal stylist can help any client no matter their size, age or budget. A good stylist will help their client find clothes that work for them - the key word in the job description is 'personal', so the stylist has to consider the individual they are currently working with.
That's why you should hire a personal stylist - they will be able to help you find clothes that work uniquely for you and your lifestyle. They will assess your body shape and assist you in finding outfits that flatter you and your proportions. They can make you look taller, or help you hide bits that you might be a bit self-conscious about. The end result will be a wardrobe that you love wearing and that makes you feel confident in yourself and you know you'll look fab every time you step out of the house.
You also won't have to replace all of your current clothes. Some TV shows make the participants ditch literally everything they own to be replaced with new clothes that are so wildly out of their comfort zone that you can see the client is uncomfortable. People have comfort zones and stylists need to be respectful of that, whilst also gently encouraging them to try new things they might not have thought of. There should be no friction between stylist and client, and the client shouldn't feel that they 'must' get rid of everything they own to please the stylist. The good personal stylist likewise shouldn't bully their client into ditching their entire wardrobe.
I have seen this in the real world, and the end result was an unhappy client who eventually went back to wearing what she wore before the stylist worked with her. That's the sign of a poor stylist. Personally I would have spoken up at the first sign of something I didn't like but people feel that they can't. Stylists are supposed to be experts after all. Yes, we are, but please, tell us if you don't like something and we can work out an alternative.
Budget also shouldn't be a barrier to hiring a personal stylist. There are a lot of us out here at all kinds of price points. Never spend more than you're happy spending on a personal stylist. Maybe factor it into your clothing budget - look at the services of a stylist as the ultimate investment for your wardrobe, so make sure that you're happy with the one you've hired.
So why should you hire a personal stylist? Because we can help you more than you might think!
