Ten Wardrobe Must Haves That Work For (almost) Everyone

Everyone has those ‘go to’ pieces that are forever in their wardrobes, and when they wear out, we go and buy a new one that’s either exactly the same or at least similar. There are some pieces that work for nearly everyone because they come in such a variety of colours and styles, so it's just a question of finding what works for your body shape, lifestyle and personality. And, obviously, what you personally like! These are not items that you MUST rush out and buy if you don't have, but they are classics that will serve you well for years if you choose to introduce them to your wardrobe.

Leather jacket

Leather jackets (or pleather, if you prefer not to wear animal products) are the ultimate versatile cover up, and whatever style or colour leather they are, you can rely on a leather jacket to pull an outfit together. They work with everything from a simple white vest to a flowy summer dress, and give an outfit some 'edge' where it might not be expected.

Dark denim jeans

Dark denim is, as a general rule, more flattering to the body than a lighter washed denim. Darker blue and black jeans can also be smartened up more effectively than the usual light blue by the simple addition of a blazer and a pair of dress shoes or smart boots. These colours are much more versatile and can form the base of an endless number of outfits.

Breton top

Breton tops are a classic piece that are a staple in many people's wardrobes. They give a distinctly French vibe which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but a white base with a black or blue horizontal stripe suits most body shapes. These tops can either be tight fitted or more loose, depending on what kind of look you're going for. Sling a leather jacket over the top of one of these, pair with some jeans and you've got a chic outfit with minimal effort.

Trainers

This covers everything from simple plimsolls to the incredibly comfortable Skechers d'Lites which I personally favour, and everything in between. There are so many varieties of trainer out there, so which ones you choose to buy will depend on your preference and your budget.

Vest tops

These can be worn alone or under other clothing items to add a layer of warmth. Vests under shirts was a necessity at my school, which was housed in a very cold building, and I never seem to have broken the habit of wearing a vest under all my other layers during the winter. As with trainers, they come in so many different shapes and colours, with spaghetti straps or thicker straps, so which ones you buy are down to personal preference.

Blazers

A blazer is an easy way to make a casual outfit a little sharper, maybe for an unexpected lunch date or a work meeting that's been sprung on you in your normally casual dress office. They look good over Breton tops or a plain tee.

Cardigans

Cardigans cross gender lines, and if you get the right kind, you don't have to end up looking like your nan or your grandpa. There are many knits, colours and textures out there, so there really is something for everyone. A possibly controversial addition to the list, but one that will always have a place in my personal wardrobe.

Jumpers

Jumpers, sweaters, whatever you want to call them, these again come in many colours and

styles. From thin fine knits for spring to properly warm chunky cable knits that will keep you toasty in the depths of winter, no wardrobe is complete without a selection of jumpers.

A suit

Everyone needs a suit. Job interviews, funerals, weddings or any formal occasion can be covered by wearing a suit. Trouser suit, skirt suit, whatever you like, in any colour you please, although it's safest to stick to traditional black, grey and navy. Worn with a bright shirt or blouse and a unique tie (if you have to wear one), a suit can still express your personality whilst being the most formal of garments. And, of course, the opportunity to wear novelty socks with an otherwise dull suit and dress shoes should never be passed up.

Dress shoes

These have been mentioned already in this post, and they are an essential item for any wardrobe. Oxfords, Derbys or court shoes cover most of the bases here, although if you're not fond of these, there are other options. I personally prefer a pointed toe kitten heel or stiletto-style court shoe - I am short, and round toes and block heels make my legs look stumpy. My (very tall, male) best friend favours plain leather Oxfords in black or dark brown depending on his choice of suit. This again is down to personal preference and what you find comfortable, but a pair of dress shoes is a wardrobe staple for any formal or professional occasion.
